Ideas for Cheap Entertainment?

Hello and Welcome Works-For-Me-Wednesday Readers!
Over the next several weeks I am planning a series on cheap entertainment! I will post ideas and tips every Friday for a few weeks if you would like to check back in for more ideas.

When I mean cheap I mean I would love your suggestions on FREE entertainment ideas or even entertainment for a few people on $5-10! Any and all suggestions, no matter how simple, are welcome!

This is a pretty boring one, but one of the most inexpensive things my husband and I do are rent movies from Redbox. With codes from insideredbox.com (OKed by Redbox), you can get the movies for a night for free. If not, they are only a $1. It's a great way to see new releases without paying the big bucks to go to the theater.

Our other favorites are having game nights. Everyone loves games, and there are some great ones out there. If you need any game recommendations, let me know. Thanks!

I have mentioned this on other blogs and it is very location specific, but here goes. If you have any colleges in your town, keep up with their events. Depending on the size of the school, athletic events may be free or very cheap. Musical events are very often free if there is a music program at the school. That's all I've got--hope it helps.

Thanks all...

Playful Pro: I need to try Redbox! I just recently heard about the free movie codes.

Nicole: Thanks! I'll keep that in mind! It is easy to forget about local colleges.

BJ: Wow, I have never heard of letterboxing! I'll have to look at that!

Game Night!! Also, we love going to our library in the evening (ours is open till 9 on Fridays) to browse books with no pressure.

Our library has DVDs you can rent for free. Our old library had tons of movies and TV shows, our new library has more of the PBS-type documentaries or shows, but they are still enjoyable. If you have a good book store around (Barnes and Noble, for example) you could definitely just go there and browse books and magazines. State parks for outdoor activities are cheap. Game night is always nice, as is doing a big pot-luck with friends and just talking.

Here in San Francisco most of the city owned entertainment has a free day around the beginning of the month. The zoo is free on the first Wednesday, and the museums will be free on other first days of the month (moma on first Monday, another museum on the first Thursday, etc). The free days are usually listed on their websites.

My kids love the tried and true Family Game Night.

If you want kid friendly things, our local library has a lot of activities, in addition to dvd check-out. You can also go to McD's or BK with a playland & buy an ice cream cone & let them play for a while...we use this on rainy days when we need to get out of the house! Zoos, aquariums, & museums often offer discounted days.

We love playing games. Settlers, panic, hand & foot, Mexican Train, whatever!
Going for walks, especially around a lake (I'm in NC) is free, super-pleasant, and good for you!
My husband and I like to read to each other, too.

Games are fun. While they cost money up front, you can use them over and over again. Also, try inviting friends in for a game night.
Try searching the internet for free things to do in your area. A lot of city websites have such listings. Check out your chamber website.
I hope these help! Good luck!
